Jane designed the Ember Vessel; veteran glassblower Dale Karry, known as Boro Burner, hand-worked it over a single five-hour studio session.

Ember Vessel: A Shulgin Original Joint
Hold a piece of history in your hands, every single day. This functional incense burner is made solely from Shulgin’s laboratory glass, with no additional materials. At its center sits an original frosted ground-glass joint, discovered fully intact and left exactly as found, surrounded by a bowl of subtly bubbled glass shaped in the reworking process. Thick-walled and built to last, this piece isn’t meant for a shelf — it’s meant for daily use. Set an incense cone upright in the joint, tuck in a bundle of sage, and let it become part of your ritual.
The Shulgin glass: the entire piece, bowl and joint alike, is original Shulgin laboratory glass with nothing added. The frosted joint at the center — visibly distinct from the clear bowl by its matte texture — is the original lab joint, found intact and retained in its natural, unaltered position. It functions as the holder for incense cones or sage.
Includes: a vintage jadeite-style mint-green ovenware plate, a white sage bundle, and a box of incense cones.

Artist Statement
In my extensive work designing cannabis glassware and accessories, I spend my life around frosted joints — so when I found a completely undamaged, original joint in my sample bag of Shulgin lab glass, it felt like a sign. Retaining the joint became the center of the design.
While I design glassware, I don’t specialize in handwork myself, so I brought in Dale, a longtime, seasoned glassblower, to make sure this vision was realized the right way. In the studio we decided not to add anything precious or decorative. We kept the piece 100% Shulgin lab glass, and left it unsigned, as that felt pure.
I wanted this to be thick and genuinely durable — something you could handle and use every day. Sasha and Ann’s work was about use, about the everyday, about real life.

The Ember Vessel was designed by Jane West and hand-worked over a single five-hour studio session by veteran glassblower Dale Karry, known as Boro Burner, who melted down and constructed the piece at Spectra Art Space in Denver, CO.
Spectra is a gallery, glassblowing studio, and immersive art space that has become a true creative home for glass artists in the city. Deep gratitude to this incredible venue and community for hosting this project.

For the Shulgin Foundation, she crafted a functional incense burner made entirely from lab glass, with nothing added. The result preserves the Shulgins’ original ground-glass joint intact at its center, honoring their scientific legacy while giving the glass a new life in daily use. Dale Karry, who works as Boro Burner, is a veteran glassblower based in Denver, CO. He brought Jane’s design into being over a five-hour session at Spectra Art Space, melting down and reworking the Shulgin lab glass into the finished vessel.
Specifications & Care Instructions
The Ember Vessel was completed on May 29, 2026, using Shulgin lab glass from Batches #22, #24, and #25. It is intentionally left unsigned and unmarked, to preserve the piece as pure Shulgin lab glass.
This piece is handmade from vintage laboratory borosilicate glass and should be treated as both a durable daily-use object and a piece of history.
Hand wash only, with warm water and mild soap; avoid abrasive cleaners and scrubbing pads. Allow the piece to reach room temperature before using it with heat — incense or sage — to avoid thermal shock.
Every piece ships with a certificate of authenticity. If a repair is ever needed, reach out and we will connect you with the artists.
