Penelope Rose (known as “Nelly”) is a multimedia artist, collaborator, and educator. Often gravitating toward glass and ceramic processes, her objects and sculptural compositions take form through a mixed-media approach, illuminating and emitting elemental power and psychedelic peculiarity. Rose looks to her surroundings for inspiration, gathering, arranging, and assembling a growing library of interchangeable ideas, parts, and scenery to create glimpses of fleeting memories, moments, and magic.

About the Work
From first submitting my ideas in June of 2025 to the team at DanceSafe and the Shulgin Foundation to the completion of this work in June of 2026, this has been a 12-month process. Mold-making for glass is a practice that requires considerable patience and planning. Once the mold is made around the model that is sculpted, the glass must be melted into the mold in another process that can take several days, weeks, or even months. Following the slow cooling of the glass, the object must be cleaned and ground in another time-consuming process. The mixed-media component, utilizing the bronze bezel, required separate skills and care to ensure the safety of the original glass and maintain aesthetic quality. This work required many, many hours of dedication and care.
Upon hearing about this project, I was incredibly inspired to create work to support this effort. DanceSafe has been a force that has been present through much of my life and has helped keep me and my friends and fellow explorers, dancers, dreamers, and groovers safe. My art is deeply inspired by my own experiences with psychoactive tools. This work would not be possible without the research and the literature of Ann and Alexander Shulgin. This piece is created with immense gratitude towards DanceSafe and the Shulgin Foundation.
Specifications & Care Instructions
Nelly’s piece was completed June 1, 2026. Her signature is engraved on the bottom of the base. The glass featured inside the dome is from Batch 21.
Cleaning: The piece will ship to the buyer disassembled alongside assembly instructions. Each component can be gently cleaned with a microfiber cloth independently as needed. Do not soak the base or bezel in liquid for any reason — due to the mixed-media approach, this will likely cause damage. The lid may be washed in warm water with dish soap or glass cleaner if necessary.
